Massey (1978) described a 16-year-old boy who complained of numbness and discomfort in his left thigh and showed an area of anesthesia on the lateral aspect of his thigh in the distribution of the anterior branch of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. His maternal grandmother and a maternal aunt had had similar areas of sensory loss for many years. Other familial reports were noted. Sigmund Freud (1895) reported that he and one of his sons had this condition. The carpal tunnel syndrome (115430) is another entrapment neuropathy that is sometimes familial.
