Sucrosuria, Hiatus Hernia And Mental Retardation

Sucrosuria has been observed with mental deficiency in several cases. However, Perry et al. (1959) concluded that the association is coincidental. Furthermore, sucrosuria has not been proved to represent an inborn error. This is probably not a single gene disorder but rather a nonspecific syndrome due to atonic state of severely mentally retarded children, with absorption of undigested sucrose from the atonic bowel.
