GCCL also often metastasizes to bone, [22] adrenal, brain, [18] lung, liver, kidney, Brain metastases from GCCL are particularly likely to cause significant cerebral hemorrhages as compared to other lung cancer variants, probably due to greatly increased rates of endothelial proliferation and neovascularization, tumor tissue growth, extensive necrosis, and aggressive local infiltrative character of GCCL cells. [18] Pathogenesis [ edit ] Several studies, both in giant-cell tumor specimens and in cell lines, have identified rearrangement and amplification of the c-myc oncogene , sometimes in combination with mutations of the K-ras gene. [28] [29] Overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been shown to occur in GCCL and is thought to be related to the high metastatic potential of this lung cancer variant. [14] Malignant giant cells identical to those found in GCCL commonly occur in lung cancer cases with a prominent major or minor clear-cell carcinoma pattern (for a discussion about this variant, see for example [30] ).

Women with this disorder have a 5–10% lifetime risk of developing endometrial cancer, [3] compared to the 2–3% risk for unaffected women. [18] Common genetic variation has also been found to affect endometrial cancer risk in large-scale genome-wide association studies . [26] [27] Sixteen genomic regions have been associated with endometrial cancer and the common variants explain up to 7% of the familial relative risk. [27] Other health problems [ edit ] Some therapies for other forms of cancer increase the lifetime risk of endometrial cancer, which is a baseline 2–3%. [18] Tamoxifen, a drug used to treat estrogen-positive breast cancers , has been associated with endometrial cancer in approximately 0.1% of users, particularly older women, but the benefits for survival from tamoxifen generally outweigh the risk of endometrial cancer. [28] A one to two-year course of tamoxifen approximately doubles the risk of endometrial cancer, and a five-year course of therapy quadruples that risk. [22] Raloxifene , a similar drug, did not raise the risk of endometrial cancer. [29] Previously having ovarian cancer is a risk factor for endometrial cancer, [30] as is having had previous radiotherapy to the pelvis. ... Pelvic recurrences are treated with surgery and radiation, and abdominal recurrences are treated with radiation and, if possible, chemotherapy. [21] Other common recurrence sites are the pelvic lymph nodes, para-aortic lymph nodes, peritoneum (28% of recurrences), and lungs, though recurrences can also occur in the brain (<1%), liver (7%), adrenal glands (1%), bones (4–7%; typically the axial skeleton ), lymph nodes outside the abdomen (0.4–1%), spleen, and muscle/soft tissue (2–6%). [20] Yunnan borders the Golden Triangle region of Southeast Asia and has been a major hub for drug trafficking. [28] [29] HIV likely crossed into China along heroin trafficking routes from Myanmar . [30] As heroin grew in popularity in Chinese border regions, injections with used needles became more common, greatly accelerating the rate of infection. [31] The disease spread over the next several years, confined mainly to drug using populations of ethnic minorities [32] in poorer, rural areas, reaching other high-risk groups and provinces by 1995. [1] [33] Sichuan and Xinjiang first reported HIV outbreaks among injection drug users in 1995, the first two provinces besides Yunnan to do so.
